QuickTime can very easily record sound from a mic and save it as a m4a file. You can use QuickTime to record voice notes, conversations, sound effects and make simple ringtones.

Just follow the simple steps mentioned below to use QuickTime for recording audios on your Mac

  • First of all, you need open QuickTime.
  • After that, press the File button and then select New Audio Recording option from the drop down menu.

  • After that, you need to press the red recording button on the audio recording box that appears on the screen. Your recording will start as soon as you press the red button. When you are done, you can press the red button again to stop the recording.

  • Now, in order to save the audio clip, go to file and press Save. You will be asked to name the file and choose the directory to store it.

2. Record On Mac Using Third Party Applications

There are various third party applications you can use to record audio on Mac such as Audacity, WireTrap Studio etc. But, Audacity is the best amongst all of them and is free of cost and packed with wonderful features. Apart from recording audios, you can also edit the recorded clips as well.

If you want to use Audacity, you can use the following steps –

  • First of all, download and install Audacity, if not already done.
  • Now, after opening Audacity, you need to press the red button to start the recording. The recording will begin as soon as you press the red button and it will make use of the default mic.
  • Now, once you are done recording, press the brown coloured square shaped button to stop it.
  • Now to save your audio, go to file and press the export button.

Your recorded audio will be saved for future use. If you want, you can also edit the clip using Audacity.

How To Record Sound (Internal)?

Internal audio includes the playback sound like an internet stream, song or maybe a skype call. This audio is slightly different as we cannot put it into Mac using mic.

Mac does not come with an inbuilt app to record what is played by the speakers. Therefore, you need a third party application to record the internal audios. There are various software’s for this purpose such as Soundflower, Movavi, etc. Let us see how to record audio on each of them one by one.

1. Record Audio On Soundflower

To record audio on Soundflower, just follow the steps mentioned below –

  • First of all, you need to set SoundFlower as your output device. Just go to System Preferences, select Sound and set Soundflower as your default output device.
  • You can use QuickTime to record the audio via Soundflower. Open QuickTime and go to File and select New Audio Recording.
  • When the audio recording box appears, press the inverted triangle and after that select Soundflower (2ch).
  • Now, play the sound and record it by clicking the red record button.

2. Record Audio Using Movavi

To record audio on Movavi, just follow the steps mentioned below 


  • Movavi automatically activates the system audio recording. But if you want to record external audio with internal, you can activate microphone input recording by pressing the mic button.
  • Just press the Rec button to start the recording and press on stop to finish the recording.
